Hiking the Chilkoot Trail

On Sunday our boss got us a deal on a Hike & Float trip.  We hiked about 2 miles of the Chilkoot Trail then got in rafts for a ride back down the Taiya River.  There were 17 of us that went, and they broke us down into two groups.  We never saw the other group once we left the meeting point…they ended up about an hour behind us.
The Chilkoot Trail is a 33 mile trail through the Coast Mountains that leads from Dyea, Alaska, to Bennett, British Columbia. The trail is a National Historic Site of Canada in British Columbia, and is part of Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in the United States. It was a major access route from the coast to Yukon goldfields in the late 1890s.

The first mile was pretty rugged with some steep climbs.

It was a beautiful trip through forest with rock walls towering above us in some areas

After 1.6 miles on the Chilkoot, we turned and hiked down to the river to meet our raft.

It was about an hour trip down the river.  We saw several Bald Eagles…couldn’t get any good pictures though, because they were so far away.  It was the prettiest day of the week, it got up to about 55 degrees, but it was colder on the water.

We didn’t get home till around 8:30 pm…but since it doesn’t get dark till almost 11pm it didn’t seem late.  Then it’s light again at 3:00 am ~ LOL!
Another great Alaskan Adventure  :)
