News From Skagway

It’s been a busy few weeks here, so I wanted to post an update.  On May 2nd, while eating lunch, we got a knock on the door and notified that the Halibut boat was coming.  John took off with some of the neighbors to get Halibut.
It was a long afternoon waiting for the boat so they had a beer break.

Finally the boat came in with the catch

Here’s Randy holding the 60 pound fish we got…we split it among 4 couples.
Our 60 lb halibut
Paid $.50 a pound for a local guy to fillet it

Randy got the head for fish head soup

They brought it back to the RV park to divide up amongst the 4 of us

We had some grilled the next night & it was the best I’ve ever had.  They have 2 big freezers in our clubhouse so we all have room to store it.
The next Friday I went on a hike with Karen, our Mobility class instructor at the gym and Pam one of the other seasonal workers here for the summer.
We hiked part way up to Dewey Lake and took a break over-looking the town of Skagway.

Then we went out to Yakutania Point

Then we went over to meet the train coming in, Karen’s husband was Conductor that day.

The shops are all open & the boats are coming almost every day now.  We worked Mon, Tue & Wed this week…getting to know the merchandise & job details.  It’s still pretty cold here, and the shops keep the doors open all day, so it can be really chilly.  I’m still learning to tell the difference between Walrus Jaw, Whale bone, and Moose Antler….part of my job is selling collector knives and we have all kinds.  John’s working across the street in the stockroom of the Outlet store.
We took the White Pass & Yukon Route train ride today.  It’s a 3-1/2 hour, 40 mile ride up to White Pass Summit in British Columbia.  Randy & Jackie had the day off too so we all went together.

It was a wonderful ride but we’d love to do it again after the snow melts.  We ended the day at the Skagway Brewing Company…an early dinner and a Spruce Tip Beer.  :)

It is so beautiful and the halibut sounds wonderful. But you can keep the cold. Glad you're having a good time.
