We spent the last half of 2014 back in Texas working as Gate Guards. In January our gate closed, so we decided to make the trip back to Georgia to get our medical checkups done, visit friends & family & take care of some things.
We stopped in Tallahassee on the way to check out a class C motorhome we’d been looking at online. We ended up trading the big 5th wheel in on the class C.
We love have a smaller motorhome again, it makes traveling so much more enjoyable.
We spent a few weeks at Mom & Bill’s then took a short trip down to Naples, FL to visit Barb & Larry & enjoy some warm weather.
We went back to GA and moved into Fort Yargo State Park, as Maintenance Hosts for few months.
Trish and Brian decided to move out of our house, so we volunteered at the State Park until they could get their move arranged. The end of May, they left for Colorado and we moved over to the house to work on getting it sold. After 6 years of Fulltime RV life, we know we don’t want to live in a house that big again.
We took a trip down to Savannah and spent 5 days at Skidaway Island State Park. This was John’s first trip to Savannah.
We did a ghost tour
Visited Bonaventure Cemetery
Colonial Park Cemetery
Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist
Dipped our toes in the water at Tybee Island
Ate at the Pirate’s House
wandered through Forsyth Park
and met up with Pam & Steve for lunch.
We accepted an offer on the house, then accepted a job at the KOA campground in Nashville. After the first weekend I was scheduled to work alone in Housekeeping, with 38 cabins and 4 bathhouses, I was pretty sure we weren’t going to stay for the 4 months we had planned.
We enjoyed Nashville while we were there.
Took an evening cruise on the General Jackson
Nashville is beautiful at night. This bridge is lit and changes colors
After a month, the job expectations were too much, so we quit the job.
We drove down to Tullahoma and spent a couple nights at Arnold AFB Famcamp. John’s ID card was expired, so we renewed that.
Then we drove down to Chattanooga. I’ve seen the signs and ads for Rock City, Ruby Falls and Lookout mountain my whole life, so I decided it was time to actually stop and see them. We stopped at Raccoon Mountain RV Park for two nights.
Raccoon Mountain Caverns is right next to the RV park, so we took the 45 minute cave tour. It was cold in there, but a really nice tour.
Then we went to Ruby Falls
Ruby Falls is another cave tour, 1100 feet underground, with 145’ waterfall.
and a pretty spectacular view from the observation deck.
Then on to Rock City
I really had no idea what to expect at Rock City although I had seen the barns and birdhouses all my life
From the website…
Rock City Gardens is an enchanted, 4,100-foot walking trail showcasing soaring rock formations, caves, and lush gardens.
Created by God and enhanced by man, Rock City is a unique geological and botanical wonder. Located on the precipices of Lookout Mountain, this scenic, natural attraction offers people of all ages an opportunity to experience enchanting beauty as they adventure along a nature trail.
This mountain top experience is developed sensitively with care to preserve natural wonders, to provide access into a strange and unusual environment, and to furnish top-notch services to the visiting public. Designed by the daughter of German immigrants and promoted by an ingenious entrepreneur, Rock City remains a national treasure of botanical, geological, and entrepreneurial significance.
This fantastic place provides a fanciful experience that lightens the heart, soothes the soul, exhilerates the mind, and invigorates the senses.
Really, this was the best place of all. If you’re in the area, definitely make an effort to SEE ROCK CITY!
Tomorrow we’re heading down to GA to visit Mom & Bill for a couple days. Then we’ll head West, stopping to visit Connie in MS, then a few days in Livingston, TX to take care of vehicle inspections…then on to San Antonio to see about a Gate Guard job for a few months.
