San Antonio

We got to San Antonio on Sat, Sep 5th and checked into our site on Fort Sam Houston. Ft Sam is a huge post and also the site of a National Cemetery, over 121, 000 are buried here. It’s quite moving when looking at rows of grave markers for as far as the eye can see.

The RV Park is nice, level concrete pads with full hook ups for $16 a day. They have a fenced dog run and Phoebe & Scruffy enjoyed being able to run free for a few minutes instead of being tied to a leash. There were horses in the lot behind the dog run, which got Phoebe & Scruffy pretty excited one day.

The Alamo is pretty amazing and it’s located right in downtown San Antonio. Some magnificent trees and gardens surrounding the actual Shrine.

Fredericksburg has a Museum of the Pacific War & Memorial to all units that served under Admiral Nimitz, located on the grounds of the Nimitz Hotel. Behind the Museum is a Memorial park with stone walls which hold plaques honoring the contributions of individuals, ships and units during the war in the Pacific. There is also a Japanese Peace Garden there.

It’s been a fun and informative visit …now we just have about 550 miles of driving to get to the other side of Texas! We’re going on to Phoenix for a few days, then we’ll go check out the Grand Canyon and see what else we can find before we go to Arizona City, AZ for the winter.
