Friday was a busy day. We moved the motorhome over to the LOMA company yard. They powered up a generator to keep the dogs air conditioned while we went for our testing & fingerprints. We finished our testing and everything around 2:30 and got back to the motorhome. Made some coffee and grabbed a snack to get ready for the trip.
Tim is one of the area supervisors and he escorted us down to our gate, hauling our “Life Support” trailer. The trailer has our generator, security light tower, fuel tank for the generator, and a 350 gallon potable water tank.
We drove 364 miles to our gate….south of San Antonio, then west off I-35 down farm rd. 117, then 5 miles down a dirt road. LOMA has 8 other gate guards in this general area of 5 counties. We’re about 17 miles from Pearsall, they have a Walmart, HEB Grocery, Laundromat, etc.
We arrived at our gate around midnight last night. After missing a couple turns and having to unhook the tow car and turn around. The gate was locked, so we waited for the area supervisor to show up with a key….about another hour ~ LOL! They got our lights and generator powered up and set up signs and so forth.
We got to bed around 3:00 am.
We were surprised by trucks already arriving at 9:00 am this morning. Most of the traffic will start on Monday, the rig is due to arrive on Tuesday, but they said there could be some deliveries this weekend, so we have to start 24 hour coverage this weekend. It’ll take us a few days of napping (when we can), to get our schedules worked out. I plan to do day shift & John will do night shift for the most part.
We got 2 shirts each, but haven’t had a chance to wash them. Our security vests are size 2X-3X so they’re rather large, but we took them until they get a smaller size. Wish I had a sewing machine with me, I’ll probably make a few tucks in the sides by hand.
The bosses showed up around 1:00. They moved the generator trailer to a better location, behind us. Then the rain came…first rain since May supposedly…Now we have mud ~ LOL!
We’re busy getting settled and setting things up.
We have no Verizon service out here, as they warned us. Thankfully we got the AT&T mobile Hotspot the day before we left Ft Worth, so we have internet capability. We’ll be getting a signal amplifier, as soon as possible, to try to remedy our lack of phone situation. Tim left us with a pay-as-you-go phone last night, but we tried to use it today and it’s not getting enough signal to complete a call either.
All in all, I think we’ll enjoy this duty for a while. It’s peaceful here, and that’s exactly what we were looking for this winter.

Definitely peaceful - except for the trucks of course. So are you guys mainly there to let the authorized trucks in and out and keep out everybody else? I'll be curious to see how this job goes. Don't spend too much time playing in the mud.
Yes, Sandie...We tested for a Texas Level II Security License. We just log the trucks in and out of the oil well site.
