We saw our first bear!
and drove into the Canadian Rocky Mountains
We started seeing some Wildlife
Stone Sheep in the road
Caribou
and Deer
and still not one stinking Moose!
We stopped at Liard Hot Springs for the night. There’s no campground open, but the park caretaker said we were welcome to spend the night in the parking lot. We got parked and quickly headed for the Hot Springs.
It’s quite a long walk, over a swampy area and through some woods.
The water was wonderful! That little bridge area, in the bottom photos, is actually a waterfall over a small ledge. You can sit on a bench on the other side and let the water hit you on the neck or back…a great neck massage. The water ranges from 108 – 126 degrees.
Today we drove the 127 miles to Watson Lake. The roads were pretty rough so we drove slow. Saw another bear.
and Buffalo
Overlooking Liard River
We stopped in Watson Lake for tonight. It’s about 300 miles from here to Whitehorse. We were going to try to make that in one day but it’ll depend on the roads.
Watson Lake has "The Sign Post Forest"
The World Famous Sign Post Forest is Watson Lake’s best known attraction. So famous, it is known - and mimicked - around the world.
The forest was started in 1942 by a homesick U.S. Army G.I., Carl K. Lindley of Danville, Il., Company D, 341st Engineers. While working on the Alaska Highway, he erected a sign here pointing the way and stating the mileage to his hometown. Others followed his lead and are still doing so to this day. On July 20, 1990, Olen and Anita Walker of Bryan, Ohio placed the 10,000th sign. Carl K. Lindley and his wife visited the site in 1992, 50 years after his first post was erected.
John added his old Georgia License Plate.
It's huge, there are thousands of signs.
